How Speedo Rating Works

A plain-English guide to how ratings, handicap bands, and provisional status work on the tour.

  1. Every player has a numerical rating (default 1500).
  2. Ratings predict the chance of winning.
  3. Beating a stronger player earns more points; losing to a stronger player costs fewer.
  4. Handicap changes the expected result — the weaker player is compensated.
  5. Official handicap matches use the with-handicap probability for rating changes.
  6. The no-handicap probability is shown for comparison only.
  7. Practice and exhibition matches never affect ratings.
  8. New players are Provisional until they play enough rated matches or tournaments.
  9. Tournament ratings only become official after the admin finalizes the tournament.
